Palo Alto Mental Health was founded to address a growing need among adults who require more support than traditional weekly therapy can provide. We serve men and women 18 and older throughout the Bay Area and California who are struggling with conditions such as anxiety, depression, trauma-related disorders, mood disorders, and other complex mental health challenges.
Our mission is to provide high-quality mental health treatment that combines clinical excellence with compassionate, individualized care. Everything we do is guided by several core principles:
Treatment should be grounded in evidence-based practices and tailored to the individual.
Effective care addresses the whole person, not just symptoms.
Recovery is strengthened when people feel respected, understood, and supported.
Every client deserves affirming, inclusive care regardless of background or identity.
Two things guide every clinical decision made at this facility: the evidence base, and the individual in front of us. Evidence-based practice means we use therapies that research has validated for specific conditions. For more on the framework behind this, see our Mental Health Approach section, which covers our trauma-informed care model, holistic programming philosophy, and LGBTQIA+ affirming care practices in detail. The full scope of conditions we treat is on our What We Treat page.
The quality of treatment depends on the people providing it. Our clinical team includes board-certified psychiatrists, licensed therapists, trauma specialists, and experienced support staff who work closely together throughout every stage of treatment.
Rather than operating independently, providers collaborate regularly to review progress, adjust treatment plans, and ensure that each client benefits from a coordinated approach. This integrated model allows us to respond quickly to changing needs and provide a more complete treatment experience.
You can learn more about individual credentials, specialties, and clinical backgrounds on our Our Team page.
Where treatment happens affects whether it works. A clinical environment that feels institutional, cramped, or aesthetically indifferent signals to the nervous system — before a single session begins — that this is a place to endure, not engage. Our residential facility in Palo Alto was designed to avoid that entirely.
Private rooms, thoughtfully designed communal spaces, an outdoor area, and a kitchen staffed by a private chef are the physical elements. The functional intention behind them is clinical: an environment where individuals feel safe enough to do the work that intensive treatment demands. For a genuine sense of the space, the Tour Our Facility page includes a walkthrough — we encourage anyone considering the program to use it.
Our residential facility is located in Palo Alto, with straightforward access from Highway 101, I-280, and Caltrain. Clients come from throughout the Peninsula — Mountain View, Menlo Park, Los Altos, Redwood City, San Jose, and San Francisco. For adults who cannot relocate for treatment, our Virtual IOP removes geography as a barrier entirely, extending the same clinical team and program quality to residents anywhere in California via secure telehealth.
If you are weighing in-person residential care against virtual programming, or want to understand which level of care fits your situation, our Frequently Asked Questions page addresses the most common decision points and our admissions team can work through the specifics with you directly.
The first step in treatment at Palo Alto Mental Health is a comprehensive clinical assessment. This evaluation examines your history, current symptoms, prior treatment, and personal goals, and it forms the basis for every recommendation that follows.
There is no cost and no obligation to complete an assessment, and it gives you a clear understanding of which programs and level of care may be appropriate for your situation. Whether the right fit is Residential Treatment or Virtual IOP, you will receive a straightforward clinical recommendation along with the reasoning behind it. To schedule your free, confidential assessment, call (650) 594-6892 or visit our Contact Us page and our admissions team will help you get started.
What is the difference between your residential program and your Virtual IOP?
Residential Treatment provides immersive, round-the-clock care inside our Palo Alto facility. Daily individual and group therapy, psychiatric oversight, and holistic programming, seven days a week. Our Virtual IOP delivers the same licensed clinical team and evidence-based programming via secure video, allowing adults to continue their lives at home while receiving multiple weekly therapy sessions.
Does insurance cover treatment at your facility?
Many clients find that their existing plan covers a meaningful portion of residential or IOP costs — but the specifics depend on the plan, the provider network, and the level of care. Rather than estimate, we verify. Submit your information and verify your insurance and receive a clear, accurate breakdown of your benefits before making any decisions. The process takes a few minutes and carries no obligation.
Do you serve clients outside the Palo Alto area?
Yes. Our residential program draws clients from across the Bay Area and Northern California. Our Virtual IOP is available to adults throughout California and serves individuals who cannot take extended leave, do not live near a comparable program, or are stepping down from our residential program and returning home.
How do I find out more about your clinical team before reaching out?
Provider profiles are published on our Our Team page. If you have specific questions about whether a particular provider type or therapeutic approach is available at this facility, our admissions team can answer those directly. We understand that the provider relationship is central to effective treatment, and we do not ask anyone to make that commitment before they have enough information to feel confident.
Mental health treatment raises a lot of questions — before, during, and after the decision to seek care. Our Blog covers the conditions we treat, the therapies we use, and the practical realities of navigating mental health recovery as an adult in the Bay Area. It is updated regularly by our clinical team and is a useful starting point if you want to learn more before reaching out.
